News Review

Assessment:  Return of your chapter 9 tests.

We'll be skipping sections 1 to 3 of chapter 10 (yes, you were assigned them as readings, just for the background references) and moving on to our unit covering section 10.4 and chapter 11.

Lecture:  Imperialism.  In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the industrialized nations of Western Europe competed to take control of new colonies in Africa and Asia.  Their efforts to build colonial empires gave a name to their era:  "The Age of Imperialism."  Imperialism refers to the practice of strong nations taking control of weaker areas.  The Western European nations were able to dominate others because of their technological and military superiority.  We look at Imperialism, including the motives, how the European nations competed for colonies, and who opposed Imperialism.  Two days.

Homework:  Read chapter 10, section 4:  "Nineteenth-Century Progress"

News Review 

Activity:  Lesson 16-c   New Imperialism:  Race of Colonies in Africa  In this lesson you'll be playing a game in which you'll assume the roles of the various colonizers in Africa.  Working in groups you'll be reviewing a map of Africa's natural resources and determine which areas you would like to claim for your country.  After each of you have claimed your land you'll be comparing your results with the colonial map of Africa.  We'll conclude with a discussion of the Imperialism land grab in Africa and the subsequent results.  Two days.

 

Homework:  Read chapter 11, section 2:  "Imperialism, Case Study: Nigeria."  Prepare for a 10 question quiz on this material tomorrow.
